October 2006.
From all indications, this is the fourth Gyakuten Saiban game - no word on part 2 and 3 other than those getting a release on Verizon cell phones on a monthly basis. Hopefully GS2 and 3 gets a GBA announcement or bundled together in some form.

Since the 4th Gyakuten Saiban is supposed to star a completely new cast, I doubt theý'd title it "Phoenix Wright 2" here, since he wouldn't be making an appearance anyway.
I guess this is either GS2 with an extra case, or a complilation of GS2 and 3. Hopefully it's the latter, because GS3 had a boss soundtrack and fucking Godot.

Oh well, I think the DS is perfect for the game. I mean nothing compares to yelling "Objection!!" into the DS's microphone as you detect a contradiction in the witnesses testimony and turn around the case in your favour. Heck, the way case five made you look for fingerprints using the stylus to apply powder and then having to blow on your DS to make the fingerprints come out was absolutely hilarious, too.
In any case it's really good news that the next part of the series ist being translated. Seems like the first game sold enough copies to justify bringing the rest of the series over here.

Goddamn it all. It's like the difficulty from the last case in the first game carried over to this one right at the beginning. You have to use character profiles as evidence now and the contradictions are excessively vague in the second case (which I flunked). The Psyche-lock is a cool idea, it's like putting someone on the stand before you get to court. And Franziska Von Karma is hilarity incarnate. She reminds me of that Boarshead Turkey commercial where that fat guy got slapped hard for asking for a plain turkey sandwich instead of boarshead.
EDIT: Remember Maya/Mia? Pearl can do it too. And she wears much smaller clothes. Yowza

So I finally had the time to finish the game over the weekend and well, it was every bit as awesome as the first game (case 4 is really a high point for the series up 'till now, for me anyway). The translation is absolutely fine (apart from the occasional spelling error) and I can absolutely recommend importing it (especially if you're from Europe).
The only downside now is that I have to wait for the remake of the third game. That is, if it Capcom should decide to release one (oh please let them do it).

I've got the US release of the game now, and I'm on case # 2. Thus far it's been well written, and there are few typos. There are some issues with grammar (such as using "they" when "he/she" is needed) but they may be intentional, I'm not sure.

I won a copy of the Japanese version a while ago (:badass:) and I'm currently starting with case 4. So far it hasn't been as awesome as the first game, but it's still good, and the Psyche-locks are an interesting mechanic and make it a lot harder to just randomly present things and hope you're right. Also, the return of some of the characters from the first game in case 4 had me all giddy. The soundtrack does suck though.

Liking it so far, though it took a while. It really is for PW vets, and honestly, it's annoying to know that you ever, ever have enough evidence to undo Psyche-Locks when you think you do.
I'm still in the middle of case 2. These things are LONG. This is a good thing, provided there are apparently only 4 cases. :\ Needs more Ema, though.
Impressions of the gals so far:
Officer Byrde: I love her. She's awesome, and she's really how when she's wearing anything but her police uniform.
Maya: My god, she's even perkier than last time around. Still just as likeable, though.
Mia: My God, she's even more commanding than last time around. Still just as likeable, though.
Lotta: Still not attractive or anything, but she's still great for laughs.
FRANZISKA VON KARMA: Total fucking complete win. Not much more here I can say that anyone else hasn't, except that as of Case 2, I'm totally slashing her and Mia in my mind.
Pearl: ZOMG cute. I thought I would hate her, cause, y'know, child stars almost never work out. But Pearl manages to be so cute and adorable and funny in her naivete that I can't help but love her like a little sis.

For some reason the translators put a ton of pop culture references in this game. Case 3 has references to YTMND, the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and the A-Team. They're kind of annoying more often than not but I laughed at the Fresh Prince one.

Yeah, I'm at, like, 11:20 PM? There have been a few puzzles. Although, really, the in-game 'puzzle' sections are easy. Unless you get stuck on the coin game.
It's a lot more difficult, at times, to know what you're supposed to do to advance the story. They try to give you good leads, and most of the time it's easy to follow, but it's just natural that sooner or later you're going to miss what's next, and have to wander around knocking on doors and checking each room.

Oh, right - I beat Hotel Dusk. Pretty neat game, overall. They brought back the adventure game genre, essentially.
I guess there's some differences in the endings you can get, too - but it looks like maybe I got the best ending, more or less.
Still, there's a certain item you can only get when you play through the second time, so I might go back and do that after I get tired of CastleVania: PoR.
Shaolin Samurai
1st February 2007, 06:52 PM
Beat it as well. I understand adventure games are largely trial and error, but at too many points in the game you had to try random combinations of everything you could think of just to advance the story. I think at a few points the character literally says to himself, "I guess I should wander around to see If I find anything."
Shadowless
1st February 2007, 08:07 PM
Really? I thought it was pretty straightforward, really.
I got stuck on a couple of the puzzles for a while, but I thought the game really bent over backwards to let the player know what to do next to advance things.
"That sounded like a door down the hallway..." and such.
Whenever Kyle said he needed to walk around or whatever, it triggered an event right away. It's just the game designers' way of saying "there's nothing left here to do - go check out the next area." I understand that it's a little bit mechanical, since as a player you're basically just jumping through hoops the whole game, if you want to look at it that way. Still, that's kind of what adventure games are. It's really more about reading a story than anything else.
Come to mention it, stuff like that shows up in Phoenix Wright a lot, too. Things like "Hm, it seems like he's telling the truth..." and "That sounds fishy to me. Maybe there was a contradiction?" seemed to crop up a lot.

Shadowless
4th February 2007, 08:22 PM
I would guess not.
It was my impression that the third game was a flashback/prequel that featured Chihiro/Mia as the main character. If so, Franziska shouldn't have been on the scene at that time.
However, it looks like the next game to get a release on the DS will be Gyakuten Saiban 4... and it's possible she'd show up in that. Perhaps not for very long, though - it seems like they're trying to emphasize new characters with #4.

An interesting thing I noticed about the first 3 PW games is that each seems to mainly focus on one of the major characters
The first PW seems to be mainly about Edgeworth, his past, and his character development.
The 2nd is about Maya's past, family, and... well, I haven't beaten it yet but it seems mainly Maya-centric.
The 3rd is about Phoenix Wright. And maybe Mia, too (I haven't played it yet)
Maybe they ran out of living major characters to be the focus of by the 4th one or something, which might be a reason why it's mainly about new characters from what's known so far. Well, besides the obvious fact that having the final third one be about Phoenix Wright himself before bringing on all the newbies makes sense
Shadowless
6th February 2007, 03:10 PM
Yeah, it does make sense. You guys are being pretty conservative about them spoilers, eh?
They could always delve into the background of characters they just introduced (probably defendants, mostly), but it wouldn't have the same impact as learning about the main characters.
Still, though. Phoenix and Edgeworth? Dreamy. I don't really know if Housuke can measure up, frankly. Then again, maybe he's supposed to appeal to younger players.

Eeeeh, I'll probably just wait for the day it (hopefully) comes out in teh west. It's not like the first case is really a good way to get a gauge of the complete game, anyways. What I hear about it makes me positive enough that it's primarily about Phoenix Wright, though. It's just whether it also focuses on Mia that I'm unsure about.
Still, though. Phoenix and Edgeworth? Dreamy. I don't really know if Housuke can measure up, frankly. Then again, maybe he's supposed to appeal to younger players.
Yeeesh, Housuke looks waaaay too young for a lawyer, in my opinion (he looks like, 16 or below to me. Sure, Franziska prosecuted starting at age 13, but Von Karmas are freakish that way). And keeps making me think of Fei from Xenogears or worse (considering how much he'd fit in as a lawyer), Wang Tang from Powerstone. I forget if his official age was mentioned, although I don't think he's actually SUPPOSED to be that young but he sure looks like it.
Rad McAwesome
7th February 2007, 07:05 AM
I hope Housuke isn't going to be one of those GENIUS PRODIGY types. What appeals to me about Phoenix is that he's the underdog in every case. Except when going up against Payne, but, well, it's Payne.
Tiamat
7th February 2007, 08:02 AM
Mia says to Maya in the first Phoenix Wright that she thinks Phoenix is a genius (Maya tells Phoenix this in Case 2), but Mia did add that he still needs experience, too. Also, it doesn't seem like most others share that opinion of Phoenix (besides Maggey). Even Maya is constantly ribbing him, and everyone keeps on talking about how he often needs to rely on bluffs. ...actually, Mia's really condescending to him too in PW2, but that's probably just one of those for-his-own-good things (she acts practically like his mom sometimes).
PW3 Spoiler: Supposedly, from what I heard, at the end of Phoenix Wright 3, Phoenix is finally widely respected though. Which is yet another reason they likely made the fourth be primarily about all new characters.
From what I've seen of the PW4 demo though, Housuke seems like he'll basically be more of the same. IE, everyones' whipping boy. Just... more... boy-ish. (perhaps too much, IMHO)

Ah, I thought I vaguely recalled his official age was given and just didn't match the way he looks, but wasn't sure. Seems that it was.

I hope Housuke isn't going to be one of those GENIUS PRODIGY types. What appeals to me about Phoenix is that he's the underdog in every case. Except when going up against Payne, but, well, it's Payne.
I don't think you have to worry about that, he spends the majority of the intro to the first case in GS4 freaking out about having to defend-you-know-who, on his first case no less
also his mentor is a huge disappointment because it's a DUDE ewwww

Also, the vest is kinda dopey, and the hair is trying too hard.

That is an adorable contest.
Some Ace Attorney 4 spoilers on returning characters (from Court Records):

Nice! An older Ema! Although I really liked the original Ema especially her "zOMG lets investigate, cuz its a mystery!" personality. However from the looks of those screenshots, she looks serious and that makes me kinda sad.

I'm already missing the old cast. :(

Well, at least there's still Phoenix Wright 3 (assuming it comes over here) if you want a bit more of the old cast before the new generation (unless you've already learned how to read Japanese and imported it, of course).
PW4 spoilers? I'm not sure if it's been confirmed, but everyones' saying that she's apparently the new "Gumshoe". (IE, detective, not class idiot). Doubtful that she'll be as inept. Although I can't imagine Ace Attorney with a detective that's actually competent, because it's supposed to be the player's job to do the competent investigating....)

Well, if each new character fell into the role/personality of a previous one, that'd be boring.
Am I the only one that likes the new characters?

Well, yes, I mean, we don't really know anything about them aside from what they look like.

But we have info from the online flash demo and developer interviews!
not to mention animations! (which are a big part of what makes the characters interesting)

Von Karma's daughter is an absolute honey. She's so cute when she gets flustered. <3
I just hope she doesn't turn out to be a man at any point in the story. That would be bad. :<

...thank you. Man, it's not often that I'm speechless and have to have someone do the talking FOR me.
Anyone up for a little time-travel self-pleasure? She is a genius, after all
