I only saw EVA once, 8 years ago. Before watching these new movies I would like o re-watch the old tv episodes but the torrents available at the usual places are awfully slow (took a day to download 20% of a single episode).
Do any of you guys know of a better place to download/leech the damn things? IRC, Web, Torrent, Whatever. (My DC++ doesn't seem to work and my usenet provider is crappy)

REEEEEALLLLLLY hoping they make the effort to give this some kind of limited theatre release. They seem to be doing something with Funimation Films (http://www.funimationfilms.com/) at least once a year (last year it was Vexille, One Piece, and Genghis Khan), so it's reassuring to know they're capable of doing things like that.

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Anima is a light novel currently being serialized in Dengeki Hobby Magazine. Initial announcement was presented in the November 2007 issue, with a short introduction in December 2007. First chapter was published in the January 2008 issue. It takes place three years after the time period of the anime and features the children at age seventeen. In this alternate narrative, Human Instrumentality Project has not yet occured. The chapters are accompanied by numerous illustrations of the characters and many redesigned and upgraded Evas. Anima is advertised as "Ikuto Yamashita presents," and he is credited as the supervisor of the entire work, mecha designer, and illustrator. Also features additional mechanical designs by Seiji Kio and in a few issues models built by some of the Dengeki Hobby modellers.

Being the movie is a reboot of sorts, it would have been nice to wipe the memory of the awful original dub from existence. Did they need to bring back the original Shinji VO? Pray that in the second movie, when Asuka returns, we don't have to listen to her same actress.

The Dub cast for eva was just fine. Shinji's voice was perfect and the VA went out of their way to match the Japanese inflections.
What was so bad about it?

It seems so far away. And I'm really excited for this one, even more so than the last, because this is the one where it leaps completely clear of established EVA 'canon' (whatever that is) and goes its own way.

EvilNeil
14th June 2009, 10:44 AM
Of course he is. It's not Evangelion if he isn't at least as much of a useless faggot as those who watch (and bitch about) the series!
Although that said, the culmination of Operation Yashima in 1.0 does feature a brief 'manning up' sequence, which you may possibly enjoy.
I wonder what's in that extra 3 minutes. Wikipedia says they all take place in the first 15 minutes of the film. The only thing I really missed from the original series was when Shinji is being taken into the base, and they're travelling up some huge escalator, and 01's huge fucking hand looms into view in the background. I was sad to see that gone.

I just have to psyche-up (or down) to watch a protagonist who isn't thrilled, in any sense of the word, about piloting a gigantic fucking humanoid weapon, working with beautiful and horny women, and piloting a gigantic fucking humanoid weapon. I'll watch everything that is released under the name Evangelion too goddammit.

Even if the beautiful horny women are all neurotic wrecks, and even if the gigantic weapon is some sort of massive torture device made of your mum? I know I'm a huge NGE apologist, but I'm still a vaguely sensible fan of the way that one of the big ideas of the series is, "what if children piloted giant robots and battled monsters, in the real world?" - with all the breakdowns and failures and fuck-overs that would doubtless imply. That makes me laugh, a lot.

I also think the movie did a good job of showing how piloting the EVA wasn't all sunshine and lollipops. There were more internal shots of the cockpit when it gets trashed and that shit is intense. I wouldn't want to get back inside after that first battle (much less after Operation Yashima).

I was sad to see that gone.I haven't actually seen any of Rebuild, but I was sad to hear that the scene with Eva-01 being unmasked after the Sachiel fight was lost. THAT was a scene that really could have benefited from being redone, because it was drawn horribly in the original. Although apparently, you do get a quick glimpse of her unmasked head in a newly-added scene... but it's wrapped up in bandages ala after the Zeruel fight in the original show. Why, I have no idea.

I thought it was a slight alternate take, plus isn't the majority of it new animation anyways?Much better than Kai cleaning up old cells for the 1000th time,

yeah, i don't get it
they've remastered the series a few times, but these are new movies
even if the first film was a shot for shot recreation of the first few episodes, spoilers indicate the second is where the storyline diverges in a major way. it's gonna be all new animation

The Rebuild movies are a retelling of the TV series and original movie as this will have new characters and events and the conclusion will be different.
It isn't some aspect ratio enhancement + new audio - filler like DBK. They are redoing everything in these Eva movies AFAIK.
My complaint is in the re-remaster of these Rebuild movies.
IIRC for You are (not) alone, you have 1.0 which is the theatrical version. Then you have 1.01 which is a remaster of the theatrical version which had touch ups to sound and visuals. Now we have have 1.11 which is a re-remaster of 1.01 which further enhances the visuals and added like a few extra minutes of footage.
This will undoubtedly happen to You can (not) advance.
Funimation is handling the R1 releases and even they think it is ridiculous.

As long as remastering doesn't include new content I don't give a shit. All of these releases will be in the same ballpark of overall visual and audio quality.

But as Shin AT says, they apparently do add a few minutes. It is infinitely annoying, and if I were paying for these I would be pissed. Same thing with the original series, which had re-releases and added footage (in just a few episodes, which almost makes it even more maddening.) Some day I want to own these four movies (because these first two are incredibly awesome) and I don't want to have to replace them every year.
I don't understand more than five words of Japanese, but I just watched that cam footage. Just like the first movie, it is awe inspiring... the kind of thing that makes me tear up with just how epic it all is. I'll assume that spoilers are a no no (unless someone says otherwise, because it'll be forever before we see this stateside) but there are a ton of things I'd like to hear opinions on.
Unfortunately, I can only geek out about all the pretty explosions... I can't really comment on the characters themselves. But what can be picked up from body language and inflection points to some pretty entertaining stuff.
Thanks for the links!

I feel like an oddity because along with downloading my Anime, I also buy them. Even shows I've already seen. I'll see how Rebuild turns out, if I like it, I'll buy it( whatever version ends up being the definitive version of each movie)...but it'll take some seriously good writing for me to buy anything Eva.

LOL
That is good advice for buying Eva DVDs...
Seriously though, I and most people are cool with remasters, directors cuts and even simple re-releases with some extras so long as they come out at least a few years after the release of the initial DVD/BluRay version, not in the same year or earlier.
