Seth and Vanessa are your gods, people.

As for the arranged music, the problem I have with it is that it was ripped directly from the AST CD. In previous games, SNK edited the AST to make it "proper" in the game. So the songs during the matches in, say, 99 Evolution, wouldn't slow down or contain some sort of silent intro. In 2K, they basically have the music playing on loop. Hell I like the AST, I just think a little more could have been done with it.

You're right on the moves thing. I'm having a little more difficulty doing certain moves, especially Iori's deadly flowers, and Kula's anti-air thing.

The puzzle mode is a huge bitch. Just start on one part of the picture and build around it. The other problem is if you have to move a piece from one side of the board to the other - it screws up the work you did so you could lose some of the pieces.

I also read that animations were cut from the backgrounds, especially the 95 Kyokugen elevator. Shit. Also in the Chizuru 96 stage, look at the big-head Athena on the right side. You'll notice that when she moves her head to the right, you still see that big strand of hair on the other side. Err, you'll know what I mean.

Of course, Hinako's time out lose pose is all the reason why she wears knee pads, if ya know what I mean. :bigtran

there's some dots missing from Kyo's punch DM apparently, and when the stage you're fighting on ices over when you meet Kula - you don't see the characters' breath condensing any more

:( Fuck, this game sucks.

Anyway, I'm all for the direct port of the AST... makes the game similar to GGX :D

I don't know - the idea of this bothered me when I first heard about it, but I thought it came out really well. The longest 'quiet intro' is only about five seconds long anyway (FF team) - so it's not like the fight is over before the electric guitar guy starts up or anything. No, I'm still delighted with the inclusion of this option, sure they "could have done more" - but when is this not true?

I forget, do the extra stages have the proper musics along with them? I loved the music in Chizuru's '96 stage, hell I'd probably do stupid puzzles to hear it...

You, my friend, RAWK! Great review. Almost makes me want to overlook the lack of English and buy it...Bu that still pisses me off.

Is Kula instantly selectable, or is there a code to play as her? Also, what have you got against Scorpio...er, Lin?:supergrin

LOL. Go check out the KOF2KDC message board on GameFAQs - there really are people bitching about stuff like that. Insecure Neo*Geo owners, obviously. :O

Oh, and I'd like to apologise for the screenshots. The ones on Playmore's site were all I could find, so for the time being we're stuck with thumbnails that actually ENLARGE the image....

She's there from the start. Zero's selectable too apparently - according to one of the screenshots - but I don't know how to. :(

Great review. I'm really looking forwards to owning a KoF game so I can join in at HerV more. Plus it should confirm which game Iori comes from. I'm such an outcast.

I admit, the FF music came out nice because right after the announcer is done, the music kicks up. Not bad.

Cherrn

I just got it.

Neil, you're European... the game runs in friggin' 50 hz. Is there a way to get it to run fullscreen, because 50 hz makes it seems slower than '99 Evo.

Also, I don't like how the music is decided on what strikers you choose (I read it somewhere). Then you'll never get to hear Kyo+Iori's music, because you'll never select them as strikers when playing 2p :(

EvilNeil
13th August 2002, 08:59 AM
How can it be running in 50hz? Someone would have had to recode it for it to be running at that rate.

Mine runs fullscreen. :\

Cherrn
13th August 2002, 10:29 AM
I dunno how it's possible O_o

I use the Utopia bootdisc, I have a standard UK DC, I use the cable that came with it, and I own the original copy of KoF 2000.

It just automatically uses 50 hz for some reason. Goddamn, it's annoying.

I reckon it's got something to do with the bootdisc and/or cable. What do you use?

EvilNeil
13th August 2002, 10:49 AM
I'm using an all-regions modded Dreamcast, an RGB SCART cable and a (naughty) downloaded burn of the game.

That's weird, forcing 50hz like that. Does it happen on any other imports?

Cherrn
13th August 2002, 11:42 AM
Well, the only other import I have is KoF '99 DMNE, and I don't think it happens on that. Akthough I might be wrong.

I'll try downloading the game... maybe that'll work
I also heard that some games require an RGB cable to run in 60 hz... where can I buy one of these? Just in case

Andy
13th August 2002, 12:10 PM
YEAH!! My KoF2000 FINALLY came in the post today! I have to say it takes a bit of getting used to and there are some things I don't like about it but the more I play it the more it grows on you. I'm glad I bought it and I'm going to really try and get into it.

Golden Cherrn: My KoF2000 runs full screen on my unmodified DC and I just use and RF cable. The convertor disc I use allows you to select a "PAL" or "NTSC" option, which means you can play your imports either full screen or bordered. Also it works with PAL games so you can play early games like Virtua Fighter 3 and Sega Rally 2 in full screen. It's the best thing ever.

Cherrn
13th August 2002, 12:12 PM

Where can I get it?

Cherrn; it's incredibly hard to get RGB SCART cables here any more. No shops sell them, and the ones I've found online are incredibly cheap, which kind of worries me.

I got mine from eBay, in the end.

Andy
13th August 2002, 12:36 PM
Well it's a much better game than '95 - and isn't as frustrating to play. There's still a lot similar though, to be honest it doesn't seem as many as five years newer.

Cherrn
13th August 2002, 12:57 PM
Gah... Ryo. Please tell me what your disc is called and where I can get it. It is of utmost importance ;_;

Andy
13th August 2002, 01:07 PM
It's called the "DC-X" for Dreamcast. It comes in a nifty blue DVD case. I just got it from Game, who probably don't stock it any more. I'm sure there'll be tons of import stores with it in, though, since most of their customers will need one.

It works with all import games too - even Sega Smash Pack and Super SF 2 X, which apparently don't work on foreign machines.

Nein (as of the Neo version), just the crappy team endings, the Kyo / Iori ending (Let's Rumble! Ghey), and the Kula ending. Oh, and the edit team endings.

Edit: Unless of course, those are the endings you are talking about in which case, yes I am a retard. If Kyo / Iori / Kula is your team leader, you see their own ending, and not any of the team endings. But, nothing like all the "special" endings in 97, or 98, if that's what you mean. IN fact, of those 3 the only one of worth is the Kula ending, because it shows that she (and candy and foxy) turned the Zero Cannon on Zero just before it fired, thus killing him, which is apparently the "true" end of KoF2k. Kyo's and Iori's are actually the same text only the swap the names.

Well I just tried the game out, and while I cant say much about the fighting portion (did'nt play much because its missing health, super & striker bars.) but that puzzles are fun and exciting! Its a good way to earn art and stuff plus its fun to listen to the extra music playing in the background. Soon I shall unlock all the secrets of King of Fighters 2000: slidey puzzles things!

You're using a burn, right? That's happened to me once so far. I just reset and it was fine. Strange error, I must say.

DarkPriest
14th August 2002, 03:45 AM
Does it really happen that often?

I mean do ya have to constantly reboot the game?

Like I said, it's happened to me once so far.

DarkPriest
14th August 2002, 03:52 AM
Man... That is just weird really.

It reminds me of the problem with almost every PSX game I've ever played on either a PSX or PS2.

Sometimes they just wont go any futher than the Playstation logo screen but then ya reboot and it works fine.

Console games are so screwy at times.

Vagabond
14th August 2002, 11:24 AM
I have a burn of SF3:TS that works fine for about 30 minutes, then reboots to the DC system screen and won't let me back into the game until I turn the system off for a while. Weird and annoying.

Olrox
14th August 2002, 01:33 PM
arrrg I tried resetting 5 times today and its always the same, plus the whole options menu is invisible too. how far down is the load save option? I wanna do some more puzzles but I might save a blank file if I just blindly hit buttons.

I think Lin's worse because he's in an SNK game, the same guys that created Terry, Mary, Mai and Iori. Midway were always fags, so it's no big deal - Lin is just such a fall from grace - it propels him to the top of the list with ease.

EvilNeil
15th August 2002, 05:20 AM
Taken from GameFAQs - it's possible to pick Zero, but only in practice mode - you can't use him in one or two-player mode. :S

Just pick your two characters and when it comes to selecting who's the striker and who's the player, press UP and Y and the "FINAL BATTLE" sound effect will sound and ... you're him. Woo.

I'm REALLY starting to get into this game now. I've been playing it practically non stop all day - it's sad that I've missed out on so much up until now.

I have a question: I have yet to fight Kyo or Iori in single player - is this possible?

EvilNeil
16th August 2002, 03:53 PM
Do you mean single player as in 1 character, or just vs. the CPU?

Either way I don't think either of them show up - they're not part of a team like everyone else is, they're just there because people would cry if they weren't.

Andy
16th August 2002, 03:55 PM
Yeah I mean any game Vs the CPU. I like the special intros and I'm curious to know what happens when Kyo and Iori fight.

Also who is Syo?

Cherrn
16th August 2002, 04:01 PM
Nah, you can't fight Kyo+Iori in SP, you have to go survival or just plain 2P to fight 'em.

Syo Kirishima was what Kyo was supposed to look like before KoF '94; essentially a proto-Kyo. He was canned in favor of the Kyo we know.
Now they just threw him in as another striker for whatever reason :B

EvilNeil
16th August 2002, 04:04 PM
The Kyo/Iori intro is really crappy in 2K anyway.

They just pose like this:
