I'd like to know if this is another stinker from Arika, or if it was actually touched by the hands of Capcom employees.

I dont think this is gonna be a "stinker".
This isnt going to be made by Arika. It looks like its being
made by the same team that did Rival Schools 2!
=D this is gonna be awesome!

No SF3 or really original cast so far.... lets see how it develops
Ultima
28th August 2002, 06:43 AM
No mention of Arika. And the cast is all Capcom so far, plus some new ones.
To ShadowPizza2k2:
I don't see how you think this is made by the same team that did RS2 (which would NOT be a good thing, BTW). There are no gameplay details whatsoever. Hell, I'd like to know what hardware it's on - it looks sub-Soul Calibur (DC) quality (or maybe it's just that Strider looks kinda blocky), but at least it's stil 8612612936 times better looking than the EX series.
Effeser:
When you say "no original" characters, do you really mean "no original" characters or no new characters? Because D.D. (terrible name, BTW), Ingrid and Rook seem pretty new t me. As for being original... Well I'm sure if I were to look hard enough, I'd find some character that they resemble. D.D. looks kinda like a recoloured K', for example.
Also, isn't D.D. a man? What's with the "Goddess of Thunder" subtitle?
I duno about this one. I like the new characters, and the artwork is lovely so far, but 3D scares me. Capcom + Fighter + 3D = ass. :dead

What's with DD being called a "Goddess"?
Does anyone else notice that the character models of Chun-Li and Ryu are more than likely the ones from EX3?
The game is on System 246, btw.
Hopefully the game won't play like EX, but also won't be VF with projectiles.
Oh and ...

It's never been more clear. Hell, i think Capcom ripped-off Akira, who was already a rip-off Ryu, with Ryu's character model. They look waaay too similar.

The stages blow EX3 out of the water, the character models sure as hell don't. And even so, the stages are barely up to even Tekken TT quality. Hell, they're too reminiscent of the Tekken (well, more like Namco) art style: REALLY wide open spaces with nice, pretty objects in the distance. The one thing DoA does do right is it's stages, at least others could follow.

all I really care about aside from the usual Capcom standard of gameplay, is that the animation is fluid. I mean, I am hoping that it will blow RS out of the water, and be able to stand up to games like Soul Calibur and Tekken in terms of sheer fluidity.

That's what I'm thinking too. Considering how desperate I'm getting to have a new arcade game to play (CvS2 is getting really old for me now), it makes it even more baffling that I'm not jumping up and down here. Like I said though, I think (I'm hoping) it's just because of the SF:EX series leaving a bad taste in my mouth. Hopefully this game only resembles SF:EX in appearance and not in gameplay though, and when it does actually come out it will end up exciting me.

Just doesn't seem that way to me... game seems pretty smooth and pretty well animated... and once again, the whole time I've been comparing it to Rival Schools and EX series, so keep that in mind.
VF4 seems pretty jerky to me... and I'm sure a lot of people would disagree, different points of view.

I agree with Internet, I see people write that Tekken is slow and jerky and it just seems so silly. Tekken 1 and 2, maybe, but Tekken 3+ flows quite well. Just look at Lei WuLong.

What exactly keeps the EX Series from being a good one?
All characters where quite simplistic (learning a grappler, a charger and a shoto resulted in being able to play anybody in the game), Part 2 and 3 suffered from poor design and the Excel system, but apart from that it was quite good fun. I never had the chance to play it in two player mode, maybe that killed it.

I don't even really care about how it looks, as long as it plays well. Hell, I'd much rather play choppy old Rival Schools than most of the 3D fighters of today. It's still probably my favorite 3D fighter so far, even despite it's dated look and some glaringly abusable gameplay flaws here and there (Gan's ridiculous infinite :dead). SF:EX both looked and played horribly though. :sweat

Well, that's the thing, coming from Capcom, I expect decent, enjoyable gameplay anyway, it's not one of my concerns.
If it was coming from say... Midway... I would be saying what you're saying though.
Also, I enjoyed RS as well, even though my favorite 3D fighters are SC and Tekken. But then, I also enjoyed EX+@ when it came out for PSX.
Basically, what I hope for is a game where not only the proportions of the characters are nice, but the gravity is realistic too. For example, in VF3 and even VF4, characters were obviously fighting on the dark side of the moon. DOA series, however, had a decent grasp of gravity, so did SC, and Tekken was kind of a middle ground, not floaty, but not quite "right" enough.
NEW TOPIC (thanks to Bitoku Kishi)
What do you guys desire out of the gameplay since no revelations have been made?
I EXPECT a rival schools type button set up, and I wouldn't mind that, but I am kind of hoping for, considering the SF characters and VS series characters, a six button set up.
Since there is a sidestep, I also sort of wonder if it will be a tap thing, or a button combination type of deal...
One thing that I am pretty much 100% sure of is that it will be psuedo 3D, and play pretty much like a 2D game, considering the characters. MAYBE they can pull off the DP motions in a tekken-like fashion, allowing for a great multitude of attacks, which is the staple in most 3D fighters, but something tells me that there will be about 18 normals for each character on a six button set up, or about 12 on a four button set up (jump, stand, crouch).
Anyway, it will be fun awaiting news on this and eventaully playing it I hope.

DOA2 is terrific, but like I-Net said, it gets old pretty quick. I've never even played 3, figuring that Tecmo's quest for $$$ woulda brought the series to PS2 by now.

Ditto. It better have six buttons, or it's already lost gameplay points with me before even playing it.

Probably button combinations. If they do have six of them that shouldn't be a problem.

I'm actually hoping for this. This is mostly why I liked Rival Schools. It was the 3D fighter that felt the closest to Street Fighter to me (yes, far more so than the SF:EX games did :dead). They had side-stepping in Rival Schools too, but that didn't change the fact that it still felt 2D. The side-stepping basically just became a dodge function of sorts - something that they could probably include into any 2D fighter just as easily. The one thing I'm really hoping for is that they don't feel they have to make the game play 3D just because it looks 3D. Whenever games do this sort thing, it usually ends up disasterous.

I hope the controls are the same as usual. Unless they actually come up with something different that really does work well for this game. But there's no reason to change something unless it's for the better. Like I mentioned in the previous paragraph, I've seen too many game companies, including Capcom, fall into the trap of trying to be different just for the sake of being different. And often with disasterous results. That's not to say I'm against innovation. I'm actually all for seeing new stuff I haven't seen before - as long as it actually works out at least relatively well, and offers a benefit to the game rather than ending up as a pointless annoyance.

Who was "your" character in that game, Internet? I was always partial to that freaky little pink wizard.
I usually stuck with Hayato, Saturn, June Min Milliam and Gamoff. I liked the heros. I also liked to use Blood and Bilstein for kicks.

Sounds totally awesome! But isn't 4 same straw raincoats too many?

Dammit, I liked Plasma Sword. :| It was significantly dumbed down from the original, but it was still fun to play.

Look at this picture here:
http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game/docs/20020902/sin01.htm
It's the one with Ryu "side-stepping" (I'm still not sure if that is what he is actually doing; he could just be going into a crouch, but we'll see). Look at the super meter. Notice how, even though Ryu has less than one level of meter, it says "Level 1"? Likewise, DD has a level and a bit, yet his meter says "Level 2". I can't remember how the SFEX meter operates, but no other Capcom super meter I know works in this fashion. If this were any other game, their super meters would say 0 (or nothing) and 1, respectively. Anyone got any ideas on this? Do the EX games' meters behave this way, or is this unique to this game?

I don't think the EX super meters had numbers. In EX3, at least, meter = three bars. Once you got a bar, you got a super.

Three bars... *looks at screenshot*
Three bars. Fuck. >:|

I'm guessing that the number beside the super meters tells you what level of super attack you can do. Maybe you do more/less damage dependant on the amount filled in said super meter.
I'm sure we'll know more on the 19th.

Great. So it's basically the SFEX graphics engine only upgraded ... which still isn't looking spectacular (even in hi-res screenies) and now the super meter behaves like EX3 ... HOPEFULLY THE GAME DOESN'T PLAY LIKE EX3.

I don't see why it should. The visuals are Capcom's hardware limitations/skill with said hardware showing through, and the meters could just be coincedence.
I certainly don't believe that those two features suggest some sort of inescapable holy trinity of gay.
I have faith in Capcom. Millions won't, but I do.

I'm not saying it's definitely going to be that way because of those features, but if those features are an indication, I'm scared ...
if that makes any sense.

I appreciate Pizza's efforts to dig up some hard news on this game, even if its been Babelfished beyond recognition.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to gawk at this picture of Haggar ripping a bat in half like a wishbone while another bat sucks the blood out of his chest. (http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game/docs/20020902/sin09.htm)
