Report: Final Fantasy VII-2?
By: Christian Nutt November 6, 2002 11:53 AM PST
Hot on the heels of the formal announcement of Final Fantasy X-2, Japanese site Quiter is reporting that series' producer Yoshinori Kitase mentioned a possible sequel to the series' most popular installment, Final Fantasy VII, in the upcoming issue of Japan's number one game magazine, Famitsu.
According to Quiter, in an interview in the mag, Kitase says that he would like to make a continuation to FFVII -- and lots of other people do, too, including character designer Tetsuya Nomura (who recently debuted as a director in his own right with Square's immensely popular Kingdom Hearts.) Kitase goes on to say that since there are so many ardent fans of the game, they don't want to make a bad game. Consequently, concrete plans and a schedule for the game have not been decided upon.
It sounds a bit far-fetched, but so did FFX-2 until it happened. We'll see what develops in the future.
It's a big night for news! :trannie

I sincerely hope nobody, and I mean nobody, who is reacting with "HOW GAY" buys the game if it ever gets made. In fact, I'm taking down names right now. Assuming it ever happens, I will buy a copy, and then I will laugh and laugh and laugh at everyone who doesn't have one. I seriously don't want you to play it. It can be my privelege alone. And I will viciously and relentlessly ride the ass of anyone who pre-emptively talks shit for a year and then changes their tune. I should have done that for Metroid Prime and Mario Sunshine, as a matter of fact.

It's impossible to create a sequel to a story that has already reached a workable conclusion.
I mean, just look at Suikoden.

Read Dark Priest's comments. Then realize that, even IF FF7 was good, sequels TEND to suck, especially when the first movie had a good enough conclusion. I refer you to "Jaws," "The Crow," "Ninja Scroll," and pretty much every other series that isn't "Star Wars" or "The Godfather."

I refer you to the fact that Ninja Resurrection is not actually a sequel to Ninja Scroll, it's simply marketed that way to garner more sales in America.
I refer you further to the fact that movies tend to get worse with sequels, while videogames tend to get -better-.

Tehn, FF 1-2.5, where all the characters are old, and they reminisce on the "good ol' days", and each tell their take on FF, and they're all wrong, because the all have alzheimers, and you will cry and laugh and cheer for those brave, formerly 8-bit souls, who now simply wait for death in their rocking chairs, reliving a past best left alone...:dead

Final Fantasy 7 at least seemed to be made with the intention of it being a very cinematic game, though. Considering the fact that the story has a resolution that doesn't leave much room for a sequal, I'm dubious, to say the least, that the storyline of FF7-2 will be worth anyone's time.

Or maybe you didn't notice that like EVERY PS2 GAME YOU BOUGHT LAST YEAR except for Devil May Cry had a number somewhere in it, I dunno.
Oh and I bet Halo 2 will be TOTALLY GAYTASTIC, ESPECIALLY since it continues Halo 1's story.

I don't remember Jaws 2 being so bad. The Crow was an idiot cash-in movie. Ninja Scroll never had a sequel; if you think Ninja Ressurection was anything but a ripoff by a different company well, fuck man you don't deserve the semen it took to create your dumb ass.
As far as that goes, Final Fantasy is a FRANCHISE on, or perhaps above the scale of Star Wars and the Godfather, so basically, any sequel it makes, by your own consideration, should kick all kinds of ass. Furthermore, sequels to many video games are better than the first ones. CIP: Street Fighter 2. Megaman 2. CVS2. Alpha 2. The list goes on.

Random, interesting thought:
I'm assuming that this would take place in the time period shortly after Holy vs Meteor, as opposed to 500 years later, after the 'epilogue,' so that characters other than Red-XIII could make reappearances. Either way, I sincerely, sincerely doubt the entire cast will be made up of wolf/tiger fuckers-- and they have been kicking this idea around since just after FF7, according to this guy.
Either way— this pretty firmly shoots down the entire 'the human race is eradicated by Holy' interpretation of FF7's ending, doesn't it? :)

If it involves bringing back Aeris/Aerith/WORTHLESSMAGEBITCH, I refuse to play. Killing off the little slut was about the only thing Sephiroth did that was cool, aside from walking into open flames and not dying.
Thing is, where can they really go from the ending of 7? 'A new threat appears in a hostile world'? Fuck, it's going to take more than just some idea they've kicked around now and then to avoid making this into pure cheese.
DarkPriest
7th November 2002, 05:41 AM
They'd better not bring her back.
That would be foolish.
It would completly negate her original role to the story.
She simply had to die in order to summon Holy.
She shouldn't be brought back as far as I'm concerned.
Besides most of the time when a character dies in a story related event they don't get brought back.
Phoenix Downs aren't gonna help the situation any. ;P

-Will the relationship bethween Cloud and Tifa be and exanded upon?

-What about Ruby and Emerald weapons, if they are still around?

If FFX-2 is about bringing back Tidus, I sure hope FFVII-2 isn't about bringing back Aeris. Then what, FFVI-2 about bringing back Leo? Yay.
Ultima
7th November 2002, 06:59 AM
I'd rather have Leo come back than Aerith. BUt I think it's a good bet that Aerith will make an appearance of some sort in any FFVII-2 (Note they say that folks at Square are interested in making it, not that they actually are working on it), probaly as a ghost of some sort. While FFX itself lays down groundwork for Tidus to return, FFVII had *no* such foundation. It would be stupid, IMO.
I'm a little skeptical on this one. FFX-2 had the benefit of both the ending and an additional post-ending setting up the sequel nicely. FFVII-2 only has one big honking gap in the ending. But based on the way I marked out seeing Cloud, Aerith, Sephy and even fucking Yuffie in KH, I admit that I wouldn't mind seeing the FFVII crew in a whole new adventure, more so now than prior to playing KH. Of course, it would have nothing to do with the Planet dying, Shinra, Meteor, Cloud vs. Sephiroth (except maybe as a nightmare match), Jenova, etc. because that all got taken care of in FFVII. No sense retreading old ground. If Rufus returns, though, I'll be a happy man. :)
This is all assuming that any sequel would indeed take place shortly after Meteor, and not 500+ years in the future. The latter would be pointless. With that much time lapsed, the only returning character would be RedXIII. And who the fuck wants to see just him return? And with a totally new cast... shit, they might as well just make FFXIV.
Personally, I never bought the "Meteor wiped out all the humans" theory. I always thought the final scene in FFVII was to show how humans had abandoned Midgar, which was symbolic of them no longer being a threat to the planet. It could have meant that they all got wiped out, but I always believed that they had just abandoned the city because it had been annhilated.
If this comes true, I actually hope it's not the start of a trend (I guess it'll depend on how well FFX-2 sells). Following FFVII, I can see a sequel to FFVI/FFVIII, but I wouldn't go any further (FFVIII and FFVI are equally suitable for a sequel, but more people like FFVI, so FFVI-2 is a more likely possibility). I don't have faith in Square being able to concoct new scenarios for their older games without it getting redundant. I mean, how many "They saved the world once... Oops! Here comes a new challenger/threat!" storylines can one swallow?

True. But that doesn't prove that humans got wiped out at the end of FFVII. There's no conclusive evidence in the epilogue. It's implied, but far from conclusive. Square - either intentionally or not (probably the former) - left the ending extremely vague and open to interpretation. Frankly, I don't believe it, and the fact that Square is even considering a sequel all but confirms that it isn't true.
Kahr
7th November 2002, 08:24 AM
I don't think Square considering making a sequel discredits those ideas that Holy eradicated the land of all humans after Meteor came ... It just means Square wants more $$$
FFVI-2 ... It would end up like CC/CT and people bitch, because Square's writing style changed from SNES to PSOne. The pre-PSOne FF games were written at sixth grade reading levels and they didn't get into all this metaphysical stuff (heavily) until VII.

Unless they really tweaked the Materia system and put in some really kickass enemies, I would prefer a true sequel rather than FF7-2. It doesn't seem to make sense to go back to FF7 when so much was already done with the storyline. If they just expose one little loophole to make the game (like some little shit Shinra operative creates a vast new empire to conquer the world), I would hate Square.
Oh yeah, leave Aeris dead. No point in some cheesy way of bringing her back just to please the Aeris fans. If if needs to be done, it should be done right.

Actually, the storyline wouldn' be about Shinra conquering the world, but about Cloud finally deciding to be nice and giving Yuffie the materia, then Yuffie using it to restore Wutai's glory, which basically involves Wutai conquering the world to get revenge on Cloud being in love with Tifa when Yuffie was the one that kissed him and not her. Then all the previous cast of FF7 would be killed before the game even began and you'd play with an all new cast and get to see the old brutally murdered in flashbacks, sorta like the bitchslap Square gave to fans of Crono Trigger's characters when they devised the storyline to Chrono Cross! People would be crying for Yuffie's blood, but eh, it's not like a lot of people weren't doing that already when she stole their materia in the original FF7 Wutai side-quest.

If Square decided to call Sephiroth "John Thomas" in Kingdom Hearts, I wouldn't stop calling him Sephiroth.
Square decided to called "Aerith", Aeris in the US/EU version of FF7, so I won't stop calling her that.
That's their decision. If they didn't want people to call her Aeris they'd issue a press-release saying "Sorry for translating it to Aeris, please call her Aerith from now on, plzkthnx".
And the thing about her .jp name being Aeris... that's a thing for the translators. They each have their own interpretation of what her name is.
Like in Hellsing... Alucard/Arucard... it's the same thing. Just 'cause the US DVD say Arucard, I won't stop calling him Alucard.
And Gatts/Guts/Gatsu
And Griffith/Griffisu
And Kaolla/Kaora
And so on...

I think Aeris sounds better, so I'll call her that. I don't have any qualms with people calling her Aerith, either (the above was a joke, duh)... but when people believe Aerith is the exact 100% word of God, and they dismiss Aeris because of otaku-ness, I get pissed.
Seeing as Square fucked up their translation staff, I'd say I can call her Aeris if I want to, and you can call her Aerith if you want to, without either one being wrong or right.

manminx: I suggest getting glasses or a new TV, because the Aerith you're describing doesn't look like the Aerith that I've seen on my screen, in any of the pictures online, or in any of the mags I've seen.
Chern:
Actually, they call Squall "Leon" in KH, though they mention a reason for it, and they do say that his real name is Squall Leonheart. But I digress.
Your "John Thomas" example is a pointless exaggeration. What about Biggs in FFVI? They called him "Vicks" in the original SNES version, yet renamed him to his proper "Biggs" in the PSX re-release. That acknowledges that Square mad a mistake originally. If FFVII-2 comes out and they rename her to Aerith like they've done for KH, I'd say that's a good indication that she was meant to be "Aerith" in the US version originally.
"But, if she returns and they name her Aerith, I'll kill someone and refrain from buying the game (but I'll buy it anyway)" is a stupid statement that should not have been uttered. The tacked on clause at the end doesn't make it any less stupid.

Alright, that's fine. They do that, fine. I won't stop calling her Aeris, though. They already made a mistake, they'll have to accept it. Unless Squaresoft publicly announces an apology for calling her Aeris in FF7, I won't stop calling her that name. Whether or not they call her Aerith in another game is irrelevant.

An FFVII remake would be purely graphical, with maybe some aural enhancements. But they wouldn't remake the battle system. Tweak it, yes, but not use another system entirely. It might as well be a different game at that point. In addition, an FFVII remake would only consume slightly fewer resources than creating a whole new game since the original polygon models are useless, so if they're going to update the FFVII cast, they might as well cast them in a new story.

Safer Sephiroth was a real bitch to fight. 99% of the time he turned my entire party into sleeping blind mute confused petrified frogs, and then cast Super Nova 4 times in a row. :(
I am also playing through FF7 again, and I am dreading that battle.

Supernova is fun to sit through... the first time. After that it's groan city, since you're forced to twiddle your thumbs during the 2 minutes that it lasts... >:(
BTW, you know that Supernova can't kill you, right?
Seraph (Safer=gay) Sephiroth isn't hard. By the time you fight him you should have 2 Ribbons, making the status effects he causes pretty null and void, and someone who is protected and easily heal the one who isn't. And everything else he has is easy to deal with. He isn't an easy fight like, say, Kefka, but he's definitely not a fight to dread unless your level is 25 or something.

Then after that, it's fucking KOTR city baby! Is the rumor about him going into GOD MODE true? I heard he reaches that level if you hit him with KOTR too many times...or something like that.
Ultima

Hit Parade: Completely untrue. "Hit him with KOTR too many times"? How? Even if you fight him with Cloud at level 99 (which doubles Sephiroth's HP), Sephiroth can only withstand KOTR a grand total of twice (or maybe 3 timesif your caster has really low magic power) before going down.
Pat: Okay, that's a little extreme. I'm sure the fight wasn't easy, though I doubt it was anything especially hard.
Who the hell uses KOTR on Sephiroth anyway? That's like using an elephant gun to swat flies...

I cant believe so many people like voice acting. And the ending for FF7 was kind of lame, with Red and his pups looking over the old city?!?! I think there is plenty of room for a sequel. I wish FFIV would get a one too, best Final Fantasy IMO, VI was really good too. I used to skip school to play those games ._.

It could be that we enjoyed the voice acting since they used professional VAs (everyone who is itching to say there's no such thing as a professional VA unless they have slanty eyes-- go form a line on the left. Yes, right there. On that white line in the middle of the road. Good) and don't have cocks stuffed in our ears.

LOL There was some dumb rumor going around a long time ago that you could find a piece of Materia that would give you that spell.
According to them it was a summon materia.
The way they described that you get it gave it away as being pure horse shit.
It was somthing like you have to have all your stats on every character maxed out by stealing the source items from monsters to do it.
And that everyone had to have pretty much all the best mastered materia equiped.
And then some guy in Kalm was supposed to give it to you claiming that it washed up on a beach in Junon.

Well cheating isn't like HORRIBLY wrong on an RPG but I think it's only ok to cheat if you've already gone through the game with out cheating first.
Cause if ya cheat your first time through it then it sorta sucks all and any challenge/fun out of it.

re: FFV
Level 5? Shit, that's gotta be a new record. The lowest I'd heard of was level 9 (by nome jpn nut, naturally). It's possible to finish FF5 at such a low level (just like it's possible to finish FFX without touching the Sphere Grid, though I would think that finishing FFV at such a low level to be much harder) by exploiting the job system to the fullest. You probably have to know the game inside and out and change jobs to counter the bosses.
re: Gameshark
Now, I find basic cheating in an RPG you haven't played through to be pretty weak sauce. But using Gameshark/Game Genie to exploit the game in new ways and whatnot is awesome. I tell you, I wouldn't have played FFVI anywhere near as much as I did if not for the Game Genie. Taking Shadow, replacing "Throw" with "Blitz", renaming him Hanzo and then SPDing everything in site = pure comedy gold. Or how about replacing Locke's "Steal" with "Capture" - aside from one area of the game where you potentially get screwed (when you play LOcke's scenario and you have to break into Narshe - you cannot steal clothes from anybody and unless you're at a fairly high level you're not strong enough to beat the enemies to move around freely), this makes Locke even more useful since you never waste a turn stealing from the beginning. And Capture + Offering + Genji Glove = 8 steals per turn. Too good. Being able to play with General Leo more rocks as well. And if I had a Gameshark, you can bet that I would use all those lovely debug codes and codes to put in characters who aren't supposed to be there like Aerith and Sephiroth in FFVII late in the game. So yeah: Gameshark/Genie = roxxors. :supergrin

Nomura has officially stated that Final Fantasy VII-2 will most likely never happen. The reason being that with X-2, it was convenient and doable because they could just recycle a great deal of their work, and they didn't have to pool so much resources in terms of development.
In the instant of VII-2, they would have to start from scratch, as they can't use any of the material from the old games, so it would be the equivalent of developing a new game completely, and they just don't have that kind of manpower or money.
He said that there are currently no OFFICIAL plans for Kingdom Hearts 2, however, discussions with Disney are going very well.
