There are a few concept sketches and renders for the new MK game up at Gamespot (http://gamespot.com/gamespot/stories/news/0,10870,2861442,00.html) - and I rather like them. :D
Kitana looks Asian, Jax looks badass for once and Sub-Zero ...

Can't say that I like Jax and his giant plastic arms (the gun on his back also gives me disturbing Stryker flashbacks), and I see that Cyrax has been confirmed as a character (robot ninjas are about as cool as MK:Annihilation), but apart from that, the character designs for MK5 look very L33T.

Hopefully the gun on his back is all that remains of Kurtis FUCKING Stryker.
And does the game really need Scorpion AND Cyrax? Blah, at least Sektor would have been a different colour.

The game artwork is just of what things may come.
So far the image that IGN.com showed of the new Scorpion (in-game sprite) is just a taste.
Midway like Namco,Capcom, are revamping the ideas of 3d games.
So far soon to be Soul Calibur will indeed be a great challenger for MK5.
Yes some of us are sayin "give up already".
But with Midway this could be a comeback.

They also have some nice pics in Game Informer. The character models look very nice, as do the backgrounds. I'm really looking forward to this, although all the characters having several martial arts to switch between seems overly confusing. Also, Scorpion apparently fights primarily with weapons, while the other character fight primarily with hand to hand combat. I don't know how I feel about that.
Anyway, they said they plan on making a really good single player game, with a mission/story mode, which sounds great!

I'm guessing the several arts thing comes into play with the fact that some of them have like multiple weapons on them. Scorpion obviously has the long sword as one of his arts, and also an art with that dagger he has in one of the other promo arts.
I'm sure Kitana will have a fan closed and fan-open art, considering they're closed in that picture.
All in all, I'm kind of psyched, it looks like Boon may've ogtten his shit together at last.

They also have different hand-to-hand martial arts styles. It (somewhat lamely) has giant block letters on the bottom of the screen spelling out which art you're using. I don't know, the effect just seemed kind of cheesy. I mean, you've got a super bad-assed Sub-Zero kicking the hell out of Sektor with a giant TAE KWON DO and TANG SOO DO on the bottom of the screen.
Also, different moves will produce different effects, somewhat like VF4, in that if you hit someone with a move, they may stagger, or another move might make them get dizzy and blindly stumble around for a bit. I think that is cool... I'd like to see a 3D fighting game try to do a good combo system without juggles, just to be different... although I'm sure MK5 will have juggles.
[edit] about the VF4 comparison, I meant it was somewhat like VF4's stagger system, but with other effects added in (i.e. dizzy stumbling, etc).

I'm really getting excited, does anybody know any concrete details about gameplay at all. I mean, all we really know come from concept sketches and CG art, there've been no actual in-game screens shown yet, have there?
And about this multiple styles thing - will everybody turn into Alpha 2 gen and 2K1 Mei Li?

If you pick up the issue of Game Informer with SCORPION!!! on the cover, they have quite a few pics in there, and very few gameplay details (changing stances, lack of dial combos, skill-based combos, story/mission mode, serious fatalities only). The graphics look nice... character models are very nice looking, but -something- doesn't seem right about them. I'm not sure what it is. Close-ups look amazing, especially Sub-Zero's model. Backgrounds so far look kind of boring.

I think it's great to see so much enthusiasm for a Mortal Kombat game, because generally people tend to be very closed-minded about the whole series. The designers have said that we need to "forget all we thought we knew about MK", and while I have learned not to believe too much of what developers have to say, it does at least indicate that they have the right frame of mind to try and revive the series.
I am a bit suspicious of the whole "multiple move set" thing, though. I suspect that if (for example) Sonya has "TAE KWON DO" and Raiden has "WING CHUN" (both in capital letters, of course), and Scorpion has the previously mentioned two styles as his selectable styles, then Scorpion will either fight like Sonya or like Raiden. Which doesn't seem to be as good as each individual character having their own unique move set. But a hell of a lot better than one move set for the entire cast, though...

Wow... I'm still excited about MK5.
I'm actually just anxious to see how they'll combine the classic MK thingos into a fully 3-D fighting game. I mean MK is 2D, always has been, so how are the projectiles and so-on going to work in the 3D environment? I really can't see how Sub-Zero or Scorpion's classic moves are going to work?
Well actually, having Sub-Zero's powers manifest themselves only in certain moves like the Mishima electric fists would be quite cool, but who knows. Oooh I;m giddy as a schoolgirl :)

I like the backgrounds -- or rather, the scale of the backgrounds. Those big temples stretching off into the horizon, full of elaborate architecture are funky. The 'arena' stage is cool too.
Sub-Zero looks a bit of an old man in that first pic, though.

Well, looking at that concept sketch earlier on, Subby looks like he's supposed to be an old man now ?!
Rumour has it that there's going to be a new female sub-zero this time round as well. Although it hasn't been decided whether she's an enemy or a protege.

I think they were trying to get 'cool ice effect (HOHO)' on his hair and it just turned out making him look like he was going bald and grey.
 I've been racking my brains trying to think of who the 'new' Subby reminds me of, and I've finally remembered. BATMAN! - that's right Bruce Wayne from Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns has the same look. Even the same style of thinning hair! I'm 2002% shure that this is just one of my crazed observations that make no sense whatsoever.
PS.Why'd they bring Cyrax back... man I hated those Cyber-ninjas and their horrible power-ranger-ish designs.

I'm not sure that this is such a good thing. When I play a Mortal Kombat game I want to be able to freeze people and toss my blade-edged hat at people. And I'm really going to miss the telepunch. While I do see what the designers are hinting at, I seriously doubt that they have what it takes to make a technical 3D fighter like VF4 or Soul Calibur. They mustn't give up some of their core virtues in the quest to make MK a high-brow fighting game.
Also, why do they have to say that they will do all new fatalities, with none of the old ones, even the favourites, carried over? It's fine if they can think of 20 or 30 good new fatalities, but I feel they may have to go the "Kitana farts, and the opponent is so disgusted that he falls over dead" route. MK3 had new fatalities, and they all sucked. MK4 brought back a lot of the old ones, and I thought the fatalities in that game were pretty good.
kyouki
23rd April 2002, 05:24 PM
The one Boon mentioned had Scorpion ramming his spear (*faints*) through the opponents head, and then tearing the head off.
[edit] Also, I'm also worried that they're trying to get too realistic (ha!) with Mortal Kombat. Like Neil (I think) said before, the cool thing about MK1 was the atmosphere of being in a cheesy made-for-tv martial arts movie, and the cool thing about MK2 was the atmosphere of being in a whole other crazy evil martial arts dimension. I would think that Mortal Kombat would lose a lot of its "feel" without the bizarre special moves.
On the other hand, Boon was saying that he could think of no way to make a telepunch work in a full 3D fighter, and I think I agree there.
EvilNeil
23rd April 2002, 05:28 PM
Crikey.
MK3 had new fatalities, and they all sucked.
True, but they didn't suck because they were new, they sucked because they were stupid. I'm sure there were better things for Jax to do than grow to enormous heights that weren't a MK2 rehash ... I think they just went mining for wacky humour and instead struck gay.

Yeah I think I did say that. I kind of liked MK3s APOCALYPSE DEATH HORROR ON EARTH feel too.
I agree, but I felt several things ruined the atmosphere:
1) All the characters
2) Bad and/or Bizarre animation
3) No bodies??? Real nice of Shao Khan's Extermination Squads to clean the place up before your fight
4) Rendered, as opposed to digitized (MK 1) or digitized + hand drawn (MK 2) backgrounds. MK3 came out when rendered graphics still looked pretty bad, but for some reason they were popular.
5) Horrible music. House style MK mixes. :/
The only cool moment (IMO) from MK3 was when you were fighting on the street/rooftop and you saw that vortex over the tower in the background. But even that didn't match the sheer awesomeness of MK2's Vortex (with the monk levitating up and down), or the level with Kano and Sonya shackled, or the Dead Forest, or the Pit 2, etc etc etc
EvilNeil
23rd April 2002, 06:03 PM
Yeah MK2 was just full of brutality, horror and otherworldly mysticism. To this day I adore the look and sound of places like the Dead Pool or Living Forest.
5) Horrible music. House style MK mixes. :/
I liked one or two of the tracks - the Pit 3 had awesome music, and the Church wasn't too shabby, but I agree when it went GAY REMIX 96 it sucked.

I don't know how, but they somehow managed to remove move of the combo gameplay in the home ports of MK2. Like, in the arcade, you could do things like in the corner, jump in kick, crouching low punch, uppercut, and have it all connect, but on the home versions, it was all gay and slow so it missed.
Does anyone know where a brotha can find a decent MK2 mame rom or MK2 emu? now that mame.dk is gone, I'm lost for anything that aint CPS2.

You guys all seem hell bent on downloading emulator versions of MK. What's wrong with the PC conversions? I found the PC versions of MKs 1 through 4 to be very accurate, but then again, I've never tried any console versions. Incidentally, MK might be the only fighting game series that was ported to the PC in its entirity...
And speaking of versions of MK, anyone else notice that the MK5 screenshots were from the PS2 version of the game, a console that is apparently technologically inferior and a real bitch to code for. Surely they should have shots for the XBox, which is supposed to be sixteen times more powerful and twenty-two times easier to program on?

Yeah, I actually own the PC version of MK1, 2 and 3, but not one of them will work on XP. Well, I shouldn't say that, 1 has fucked up sound, 2 runs WAY too fast, and 3 won't run at all.
I would also like to note that while I think MK3 & 4 were steaming piles of ass garbage, I really enjoyed MK1 and 2 even to this day. I'm also sure no matter what most people say about corny characters and stupid juggles, most of the world did as well.
I really have high hopes for MK5, I certainly don't expect it to hold a candle to VF4, Tekken 4, or Soul Calibur 2 as far as depth goes, but it should at lesat be fun.

Also, according to the official site / press releases, every character is going to have 3 different fighting styles to choose from. I'm guessing the reason that everyone seems to have every style in the movies is because they are not all completed, and they're just filling out the charcters until the full styles are done (kinda like how in MK4's pre-release versions some people shared weapons). I say this only because some of the arts, Tae Kwan Do, and Mi Shu la Blah, Tai Chi, Weapon Arts, etc. . only appear in one or 2 shots, whereas snake and crane seem to be everywhere.

OK, each dude has 2 weaponless fighting styles and 1 weapon based style. I reckon the reason initial shots had everyone fighting with crane was because some of the newer styles hadn't been allocated yet. Anyway Scorp currently has Hapkido, karate and ninja sword, and my other fave Subby has TKD, Shaolin fist and broad-sword. NB. the absence of crane!
The presentation menus, loading screens look slick. The 'Konquest' mode'll be Soul Calibur-esque Quest mode. There'll supposedly be enough extras considering there's a special extra's mode and Krypt mode=secret shop.
Ooh, and some of the character models look sweet. Old Subby is quite cool (hohoho!), but I still believe Kiss Shang Tsung is better than the current fag Shang Tsung prancing around.
Looks like perennial lamers Johnny Cage and kano'll also be in the game - damn. Anybody is better than those two gays- Kabal, Baraka, Sheeva, another palette swap ninja- just not Johnny cage!

"Mei Li"? Er, did anyone else think "May Lee"? I thought there was a limit on how long after another game is released (in this case, KoF2K1) that you can pass off swiping names as "coincidental".

Oh? I thought every character was going to be able to use every fighting style, but would only specialize (huh?) in one? I guess they changed their minds during production. This sounds somewhat more interesting, but I hope that they don't give everyone the ability to assume every style.

I have to say that it looks pretty cool, moves smootly and sounds like good old MK. I'm still fearing the button layout; Five action buttons total, one of those for blocking, another one for style change. From hands-on stories, I've heard that there isn't really a system in the attack buttons; Not weak punch, Hard punch, Kick, nor High, Low, Medium attack. Hmmm.....
I like Johnny Cage btw :shy

I've never been much of a Johnny Cage fan, but he is one of the core characters of the series, and as such I'm glad to see him back. Same deal with Kano. I will miss Liu Kang, though.
I read in some report that the game had five attack buttons (not just five action buttons) in addition to block and stance switch. This is possible, as the game is console only, and consoles have about eight buttons available. The report also said that the five attack buttons had no real system in their layout (as Frietstof mentioned), and five random attacks times three separate stances sounds frustratingly difficult. Hopefully they will come up with a more coherent structure before the game is released. I don't like the idea of having to memorise fifteen different attacks before I can perform the basic move that I'm trying for.
